The overall aim of this course is to enable students to develop their understanding of both public health policy and programs as a part of public health practice.
The overall aim of this course is to enable students to develop their understanding of both public health policy and programs as a part of public health practice. Students will learn about the concept and role of policy and the key concepts, models and approaches to designing and evaluating public health programs. Case studies from multiple countries and contexts will be used as teaching material.
This is a core course in the Bachelor of International Public Health (3880) comprising 6 units of credit towards the total required for completion of the study program.

Course outcomes
The overall aim of this course is to enable students to develop their understanding of both public health policy and programs as a part of public health practice. Students will learn about the concept and role of policy and the key concepts, models and approaches to designing and evaluating public health programs. Case studies from multiple countries and contexts will be used as teaching material.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Examine the concept of policy and program and how these are used in public health;
- Identify significant policy and program actors, and the influence they have on public health;
- Understand contextual issues that frame and influence public health policy and program design and implementation from a developing country perspective.
Learning & teaching
The principle that the best method to learn is by “doing” is followed in this course. The course draws on the provision of online lectures and group discussion work and other course material as key teaching strategies. The combination of these teaching strategies, integrating both individual and group work throughout the term, will enable students to respond to the assessment tasks and meet the learning outcomes.
